Hello!
Welcome to the third installment of the infamous 'Kenzie and Toby's epic adventures across the globe'. Last time you heard from us we were about to depart from Bangkok on our way to Koh Phangan. We took a VIP Bus (yes, we are high rollers) and a boat once we reached Surathani. A massive 20 hours later we finally reached Thongsala Pier and got a taxi to the hostel we were due to stay at. The Dancing Elephant has to be the best place we've stayed at so far - owned by David (entrepreneur, inventor of the legendary "Bucksack" and all round french madman) and managed by his sister-in-law and baby (now a pre-requisite for every hostel we stay in now - must have at least one cute baby in the vicintity), we spent 12 of our best days so far here. The 19 man dorm was empty when we arrived so we went off, explored and had a romantic meal on the beach.
The next day was Half Moon and we met up with Candian girls we'd met the night previous. So we UV-ed up, wrote offensive remarks on all of our bodies and headed out into the jungle. A good night was had despite the constant side-trance music that everyone seems to love out here for some reason! The next day we rented out motorbikes again (our new favourite past time) for 150 Baht each (3 quid in english) and toured the island. We saw a few waterfalls, the tallest tree in Koh Phangan (pretty awesome!) and a woman selling chicken on a street corner. We also found the motorbike version of the babe magnet - Toby drew the short straw and took the Babe Magnet V2, which on the way home broke down on a vertical hill climb! That night we all went out with everyone in our dorm and headed to Cactus Bar on the beach - buckets were had and an incredible night ensued. On Valentine's Day we headed out for a meal on our own and Toby had a shark steak. The next few days on the build up to the Full Moon Party pretty much consisted of everyone sleeping all day, laughing about David and his ludicrous inventions and inability to not give you a seminar about his life, Mama Snitzels chicken sandwich shop and going out in the evening. We had managed to find a group of people in our dorm (6 english, a kiwi, an american, 2 aussies, a swede) who we all got on really well with and who we spent pretty much 24/7 with which was awesome!
After the legendary Full Moon and Toby's sightseeing trip to the Malaysian border we had a few days of recovery and then 9 of us decided to head all together to Koh Tao - a small island near Koh Phangan. We find an awesome resort called Wind Beach which was on Sairee Beach and spent another amazing 6 days there. Koh Tao is my favourite place so far - so picturesque, chilled out but still has a great nightlife (especially at Lotus Bar next door, which we hit up most nights). We did a day of snorkelling and saw the most amazing tropical fish but no sharks unfortunately or fortunatley depending how you look at it! We also went to a cabaret show with Ladyboys which was an interesting experience, especially when Dan our kiwi friend was called up on stage and dressed in womans clothing and danced for 5 minutes! Hilarious times were had and we finally got our golf fix the next day at Koh Tao's mini golf course, which had holes resembling the Golden Gate bridge and Stone henge to name a few! We also had the best meal so far in Thailand...Fajitas at El Toro! Literally the nicest food I've ever had but naturally it wasn't Thai food!
After the group disintergrated due to flights and other plans, it was left to me, Tobes, Ed and Oli to trek onto Phuket alone! After VIP-ing it on our boat and meeting maybe the most surly bus driver ever (definitely would not get a job at Kenzies!) who we made massive enemies with we ended up in Phuket, which is just a bizarre place. You could be anywhere in the world with all the Starbucks, McDonald's, KFC's and Boots' down the main road in Patong. The streets are lined with go-go bars, fat western middle aged men and english football playing in every direction you look! Not some where you could stay for more than 3 days - we checked in at our hostel (another awesome place found by Ed and Oli) and had our first western fast food since we arrived in Thailand. McDonald's here is pretty similar to back home except for the huge cockroaches climbing up and down the walls as you eat, which really adds to the atmosphere! The nest day we headed to the beach, which is horrible compared to what we experienced in Phangan and Tao - dirty and covered in sun loungers with fat leathery western men. We went out in the evening, which was an experience - neon lights everywhere and being accosted by everyone is a 10 metre radius! Still, we had a good night and now we're here. Our plan is to leave for Ko Phi Phi tomorrow (the most picturesque place in Thailand) and then make our way down through Malaysia before our Australian trip commences.
Miss you all and we will update in a few weeks.
