And believe it or not, for a brief time today I was in that land and I was King. But before that the results of the GRN competition. Sadly we didn't get ant correct entries so we're heading for a rollover tomorrow night with a chance of winning TWO colour pictures of the GRN. Keep those answers flooding in ….
Day 3 today and starting to get the mornings sorted. Turned up early but only thanks to Gail who woke me up with a cup of tea after I stopped the alarm and promptly went back to sleep. Even so, arrived 20 minutes early, signed in and headed for the food. For some strange reason, you have to give in a lunch ticket to get your quota of rolls, cakes, biscuit and fruit. But there's nothing to stop you queuing up for as many sausage/bacon/egg rolls as you can eat. I'm rationing myself to one per day at the moment but the brakes will be coming off soon. Then out to check the car and make my way to the silver table for the briefing [didn't expect silver did you].
Got chatting to the lady sitting beside me. She came from Wolverhampton, she was doing her first shift and said she had forgotten everything from the training. I remembered feeling just like that on Tuesday and offered to give her the benefit of my vast experience. So we went out to her car together and I talked her through the various checks and bits of paperwork that we have to do. All the other cars in the "Silver" section of the car park left one by one [yes, back to the Athletes' Village again] until our two cars were the only ones left.
The Silver section traffic marshal wasn't happy with that. He came over. "Come on" he said. "You can't stay here. You're needed at the Village". I thought about putting him right and saying that judging by what had happened earlier in the week no-one would miss us if we didn't show up all day. But he had a hi-vis jacket, a radio AND a clipboard and I thought it would be pointless. The new woman - Barbara - said she didn't know where the Athletes' Village was and had forgotten how to use the Satnav. That fell on stony ground. "Just follow him" he said pointing at me. "He knows where it is". That's not technically true by the way. I know how to find it using a Satnav now but wouldn't have a clue otherwise. I don't think he was in the mood to debate it though so off we set with Barbara following me.
Now if you thinking "I bet that didn't work" you're spot on. It went OK for a while but than she got held up just as I was turning right. I pulled over to wait and kept a check in my mirror. But she drove straight on ….. maybe never to be seen again. I froze and really really felt for her. If that had happened to me at the start of the week it would have been disastrous and I really don't know how I would have coped. I guessed she must have been feeling much the same just at that moment [as well as cursing me I expect]. Still no useful hanging around I thought. What's done is done. Nothing I can do to help her now. Might as well go to the Athletes' Village myself. Bet you can't guess who I saw when I finally made it? Correct ….. Barbara!!! Apparently all she'd done was wind her window down and ask for directions and - hey presto - she was there. After that achievement, my feelings of concern for Barbara have turned into a mixture of jealousy and admiration. Bet she won't be asking me for any more help …..
But did that put a dampener on my day? Hell no ….. I had my first passengers [sorry clients] this afternoon. First a couple of women from the Scottish Board of some sport or the other. They starting asking me what I thought about it all and I guessed they only wanted to hear good news. So I went into overdrive and told them how wonderful it all was. Thinking about it, they jumped out of the car pretty quickly when we got to Commonwealth House - maybe they thought I was on something. Then there was a father and daughter who wanted dropping at Glasgow Central station. He was some sort of sports adviser to a member of the Commonwealth that I'd never heard of; an island close to Fiji. Funnily enough I pulled up right outside the pub that wouldn't let me in a few weeks ago because I didn't meet their dress code. I thought about going in wearing my Clydesider uniform to make a point but didn't.
Another day off tomorrow. Then start new shift patterns finishing at midnight or later. That means starting in the afternoons so no more sausage, bacon and egg rolls for me for a while. Ho hum ……
