630am start today. Car call sign Bravo 102 [different]. Orange team [different]. Sent to the Athletes' Village [same]. And still no passengers [same]. Bit more going on than yesterday but still pretty quiet. [note to self; stop referring to them as "passengers". Everyone else calls them "clients"]. Anyway, didn't really mind not having any today ….. I had a cunning plan that was going to keep me occupied.
Quite a few of the drivers come from Glasgow and know it like the back of their hand. But there's many others who - like me - haven't got the foggiest. First achievement of the day was when I finally cracked the satnav [not literally]. My next job was to put the postcodes of all the places I might have to take someone into it.
But we've been told not to rely on the satnav and only to use it as a last resort. The Games people reassured us at the training days that it would be dead simple to find our way around Glasgow; "Just follow the GRN". "GRN" is the "Glasgow Route Network" and are the designated roads we should use. We were told that they'd be clearly signposted and - sure enough - magenta colour signs have popped up all over the place. These are the roads that have been specially designated for Games traffic and often don't match the satnav. Trouble is if we don't stick to the GRN then we'll simply be adding to the traffic jams on the other roads in the city. I was talking to another driver yesterday [he came from Glasgow] and he said it was dead simple ….. "The GRN runs east to west and everything you need is off it. You can't go wrong". He sounded so confident that I thought I'd give it a try today.
So around 10am I radioed in. "Control Control. Bravo 102 here. It's very quiet at the Athletes' Village so I'm going out on some route training on the GRN, Over". Control said fine, just let us know when you're back so off I went for a few hours. Sad to say that it didn't help at all. In fact, it just added to my confusion. My apologies to those of you who live in Glasgow for adding to the traffic and making the jams worse but I'm afraid it's the satnav for me from now on.
Let's end with a little competition shall we? Three questions; [a] what car number do you think I'll be in next time? [b] what colour team will I be in? [c] and how many passengers [sorry, clients] do you think I'll have? That'll be on Friday - day off tomorrow. Send your answers in for a chance of winning an autographed full-colour picture of the GRN.
Take care ….
