Monday 20th July 1981
Drove down to the ring of Kerry with narrow and windy roads. In one place we were held up for half and hour while a coach passed a truck on a corner. Most people were very cautious. The McGillycuddy's Reeks not seen much because of low cloud. Views of beaches, rocky outcrops and rocky coast without much growing on them. Had lunch at Waterville overlooking the sea. from there we tried to locate some beehives by Lough Currane. No-one knew where they were.
Down the road saw some standing stones but not the basilian Dolmen. Turned aside to see Derrynane House in a park with flax and cabbage trees. The roads were lined with fuschia, rhododendrons of great height. We walked from Derrynane House over to the beach. Took photos of Judith by an Ogham Stone. Last part before Kenmare much more gentle and some farms again. Repeated the pass from Kenmare to Killarney and the views of the Lakes. Then went into grounds of Muckross House and gardens but no time to look through. The road was congested again through Killarney although not as bad as yesterday.
Drove on towards Tralee and stayed the night at Anglers Rest. Saw two farmers spraying a few scraggy sheep for flies. It rained so I could not have a walk after dinner or I would have found the nearby fishing river which we crossed the next day as soon as we left the guest house.
