We went to Pai and were only going to stay a night or two but ended up staying a week as it was amazing, I have travelled a fair bit of Thailand and think Pai is one of the best places here, it's a tiny little place in the mountains, and takes four hours on a bus to get there, and is only 135 km on the windiest road I have ever been on, 762 curves to be exact and of course I got very car sick and even had to tell the driver to stop so I could get out and be sick, how embarrassing right! When we arrived we went in search for the guest house 'Breeze of Pai' where James and Des were staying and from then on for the next week consisted of many hangovers and lost days but we had an amazing time and it was so fun. Pai is such a quite chilled out place and the atmosphere is just the best, I have come to the conclusion that Pai was actually made for me!! The first day we got there was Des's birthday and obviously we got very merry, and towards the end of the night I HAD to have this clay pug that was outside someone's house, so in short I stole it, I am not proud of this fact but in all honesty I probably could not even tell you my full name at the time, it was very interesting waking up in the morning with a pug sitting on the table with its front legs missing, and even more interesting trying to dispose of it.
We made some lovely Thai friends when we were there, (Fern and Bee), all six of us just hung out for the week getting up to mischief and went exploring on bikes, we went to a few beautiful waterfalls and the Pai Canyon which had breathtaking views and we all had wobbly legs looking over the side, Bee and Fern invited us to their house for a barbeque and of course being African, we were so excited to have a braai and some meat, but all it was, was a tiny electric grill and we cooked our meat in the lounge, but it was actually really lovely and it was such a good experience, how the locals do it right!
Pai is so tiny that you could actually walk around the centre of the town in 10 minutes and they have some very sweet hippy shops and some lovely bars and restaurants, we went to a restaurant called 'Pai Country' everyday as they had an awesome western menu and made the best fruit shakes!
Getting back to Chiang Mai was good too and all six of us went together and are all staying in the same guest house again. These couple of weeks have been good as we visited Doi Suthep which is a temple on a mountain and has some amazing views of the city. The day we went was crazy as it was raining and when we looked over the city from the mountain the rain clouds over the city were so beautiful, check out the pics! Fern took us ten pin bowling and that was good fun, we all were pretty useless but after buying a big bottle of scotch whisky to share things got interesting. Most days have been spent playing cards, pool and watching movies and talking rubbish. You will be happy to know that we have actually managed to make a decision and leave Thailand, finally and booked out flight to Malaysia, in the mean time though, more drinking and doing nothing is definitely on the cards.
Thanks to our friend Speedy he put us in touch with some Zimbabweans living here in Chiang Mai, can you believe it, I was so shocked and very excited to meet them. There are 12 or so Zimbabwean families living here, and working in the tobacco industry so it was lovely meeting them. We had a braai, and I tell you it was the best, and they have such a lovely little community. Andy who is also from Zim took us under his wing a few times and showed us around town, the one night he took me to my first Go Go Bar which was a big eye opener for me but I did not feel uncomfortable at all, until of course a sweet looking thai girl decided to feel me up….at first I thought she was just giving me a hug but then her hand started going up under my skirt, while the other massaged my back, I got such a fright I jumped of my chair and pretended I needed to ask Andy something, and then only after did I realise the meaning when she kept saying to me, ' you, me, him together no problem,' talking about Darren. Haha it was so funny.
Get this, we walk into our guest house at 3.30 in the morning, obviously a little drunk and I hear shouting and things being thrown around, so of course my female antennas go up…Darren is getting mad at me because he does not want me to get involved but hey I cant stand their and listen to what sounds like a woman getting beaten to death….and look I am not going to go storming in….anyway after some thought I go upstairs with the Thai girl that works here and find in a small bedroom that has been wrecked, a woman lying on the floor crying…her useless, a*******, b****** boyfriend tried to kill her by strangling her half to death and punching her repeatedly in the face. Poor woman was hysterical and had horrible marks on her neck and obviously her face was really bashed up. It took a while to calm her down and put her in a separate bedroom all the while holding myself back from going to beat the d*** head with a very large stick. Thank- goodness I found out that she has left him…but the cheeky a******* walks around the guesthouse like he is gods gift!! How dare he!
Anyway this blog is all over the place as I have been adding to it for a few weeks now but we have had such a great time in Chiang Mai and Pai and will definitely be back, its so funny because we were not even planning to come to North Thailand but when we were in Vietnam we met some guys who did the trek and said it was worth it so that is how we came to this part of Thailand and we were only meant to stay for a week but have been here a month, the joys of travelling and not having to stick to a RTW that has been paid already! Spontaneous is the best way and this just proves it. We have met so many amazing people and friends that we will stay in contact with forever and it has been one of the best experiences so far. Just Amazing and I will miss is so much but I know that our trip has only just started….can you believe I have been gone three months already!!!
