Our Last night in Siem Reap we just went for a really lovely dinner, we always seem to find the best places to eat on the last day, we had a Cambodian curry and it was really lovely, we are both actually enjoying the food, although I must say we would kill for a good hearty Sunday roast or just some home cooking, I get so sick of eating rice and bloody noodles!! Oh god talking about food yesterday morning before we went to the Temples we went to a place for breakfast and they had French toast on the menu, now in Thailand we pretty much ate French toast everyday and it was lush, so anyway we ordered it and when it came out I nearly vomited just looking at it never mind having to eat the b****** thing…..it was a baguette cut up in pieces and soaked in egg but not cooked properly, they were soggy and disgusting we each had a piece cause we were starving but it was truly disgusting!!! The menus here look like they do in any restaurant in England minus the very bad English, probably because they copy the menu from the internet and have no clue what so ever how to cook bloody thing so when you order a western dish, you are pretty much 100 percent going to be disappointed!! The hardest thing about travelling is the eating part…especially moving from country to country and having to get used to the food, also the sleeping, because in Asia they don't know what 'soft' is, most beds are rock hard and the pillows are either 50 foot high so your neck breaks or they are so lumpy!! Haha sorry I am having a good old b**** because at present I am sitting in a bus that is playing blasted Cambodian music so loud and I am getting so worked up that I may hurt someone!! I know its part and parcel of travelling but when you have to wake up at an ungodly hour to get a stupid bus and then proceed on the most uneven and potholed road in the world its no fun, and to top it off the stupid arse in front of me decided to push his seat back so he can get comfy, yes never mind about squashing my knees, right, I don't bloody need them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I once read in a travel book, that when you start getting annoyed and start throwing abuse at the locals, its time to move on, don't get me wrong I love it here and its not time to move on just yet, its just that I am having a very bad morning, but I so agree with that!!! I will let you know when I do get to that point because I can assure you it wont be pretty, don't worry I wont land myself in prison, I hope not anyway. J
(few days later….as internet is so slow)
We have been in Phnom Penh for five nights and it is ok. We much prefer Siem Reap as its not so busy. We are staying in a guesthouse called 'the drunken frog' and its over the river and looks like it may soon just fall over, the river itself is brown and dirty and has some suspicious things floating around that very much resembles something that you would find in a toilet bowl, minus the stink haha, we have been told that we MUST not feel tempted to go for a swim no matter how hot we are! The second day we were here we went to the Killing Fields, it was a very sad day as I have heard about the Khmer regime but never really understood the horror of it all! In the genocide centre they have a huge glass room with all the skulls that were collected from the mass graves. These people were bludgeoned to death so that the soldiers could save on bullets, and most of them were children that were brainwashed to do this. There are so many small skulls as no one was spared, its just horrifying. We then went to the S21 were a school was turned into a torture prison!! I managed to take a few pics but there are loads of pictures of the tortured dead that I did not have the heart to take of as I feel that it is not respectful, I just can't tell how sad it was going through these rooms, these poor people went through hell and by their own people its just sickening, and because it in the 70's I cant help but look around me at the people here and wonder whether they were one of the tortured or the prison guards!! Very sad. We then went to the kings palace and paid $6 each, what a bloody waste of time and money!!!! Was very disappointing. We had to wait three days for our Vietnam visas, so we just pottered around here as there is not much else to see. I really wanted to go to an orphanage but they want us to buy a bag of rice for $40, and although I would love to do that it is just too much as Cambodia is really expensive and put us on a tighter budget. We did however find a water park which was nice to have a dip in a pool until we saw the children blow their nose in the water it just put me off and you know how week my stomach is anyway.
Its so weird because all the woman here walk around in pyjamas all day….not sure why maybe they don't know you are meant to sleep in them but they all were them all day long….yesterday we were on the back of bikes (taxi) and we stopped for petrol and the petrol attendant was wearing pink pyjamas' haha was very funny.. The other night we were in a restaurant and a little boy selling books came in and asked me to buy one, after about 100 no's he eventually gave up, put his box down and sat on my arm chair and proceeded to play with my phone…..he was trying to look for some games but found the voice record button and was singing into my phone it was really sweet actually. It made my day as at least for 20 mins he was being a kid and not wandering the streets, but then our last night he spotted me and pointed to a drink and said he was thirsty, cheeky little s***. Haha We are now off to Vietnam, another 6 hour bus ride. We will be travelling from Ho chi Min city all the way up the east coast to Hanoi which will take about a month to do…..
Cambodia was really lovely and also a bit manic all at the same time, it was an eye opener to learn about Cambodia's past and see the history of the country. The people can be friendly sometimes as we have had a street girl selling water begging until I lost my temper and walked away with Darren following but she told us to 'f*** off', I was shocked but to tell the truth I was not far from saying it to her myself haha.
Anyway enjoy xxx
