Today we had to leave Nice for Barcelona, another early train ride and it was about 9hrs all up. We walked to the train station from our hotel and had a really nice train for the first part of our trip which was about 3hours long, we then had to change over trains at Montepellier (still in France). From Montepellier we were headed straight for Barcelona and had to get on the Spanish train… ohhh dear.. Ive never seen such an old train! It was straight out of the 50s or 60s, the seats, the curtains everything, I cant believe they still have trains like this in operation! We were suppose to get into Barcelona at 750pm but when we were about 500m from our station the train stopped in a tunnel and we were stuck there for about half an hour.. there must have been something blocking the track so that was a bit annoying after such a long day of travel. When we got in we got a taxi to our hotel and got dropped off at the end of our street and had to walk down the laneway to get to it, the taxi driver didn't speak English but through mime and about 2 english words he knew he was trying to tell us to watch our bags and that people would try to grab them off us etc.. a little bit scary when it was now dark outside, very busy and we were loaded up with bags and didn't really know where we were going.
We made it to our hotel and checked in, it was one of the biggest hotels we'd been in so far but it was a bit dodgy, the rooms were old but huge, they had 5 single beds in there! In the centre of the hotel was a courtyard with all the levels opening up to it and all these hanging plants etc.We then went out in search of dinner. Just at the end of our street was La Ramblas one of the main streets and it was packed with people. There was a one way street down either side and in the centre of the street were markets, painters and street performers the whole length of the street. We found a restaurant and had a proper Spanish dinner, I had a paella and sangria. After dinner we walked to the end of the street and back again, I couldn't possibly go to bed with without having churros! We found a place and had churros and coffee… unfortunately they weren't the best ones I've had so that was a bit disappointing.
