Woke up pretty early this morning and headed upstairs for the breakfast that is included.. it was very simple - some pastries, toast, yoghurt etc but it was nice.
We headed off to get on the hop on hop off bus to go to the colosseum - our first stop of the day. We did a walk around the outside and as we were about to brave the line ups to get inside we were approached to see if we'd like to join a tour group who would take us around and give us the history etc. We thought that was probably a good idea.. we were told it would take about 45mins...2hours later we finished! It was really good though, the Italian tour guide spoke pretty good english, had a microphone and was really quite funny. He gave us heaps of history and insight into the construction etc of the Colosseum which was really interesting. The tour was suppose to continue through Palantine Hill just across from the Colosseum but seen it was already lunch time by the time the "45min" colosseum part ended we decided to give that part a miss and catch the bus over to St Peter's Square. On the way to the bus I got a donut that i'd be safe to say was the biggest one i've even seen. It was yum!
We had lunch in the street in front of St Peter's Square, just a panini, I had a 'tomato and cheese' one with the ripest tomatos i've ever tasted or seen.. it was amazing. We had a wonder around St Peter's Square and took another zillion photos of St Peter's Basillica etc and decided not to go inside as there was massive lines.. it had also started to come across cloudy so didnt want to miss the Spanish Steps or Trevi Fountain incase it rained... so we headed back to the bus.
Next stop was the Spanish steps.. The bus stopped quite a way away so took some navigation skills to find our way there.. the street that leads to the Spanish steps is the Rome equivelent of Rodeo Drive full of designer brands and very well dressed Italian woman. The steps were PACKED, i'd hate to see it when its actually peak season (June-Aug)!All the bogenvillia flowers they have set down all the stairs make it look really really pretty. After a lap up and down the stairs it was time for our next stop - The Trevi fountain... Again it took a bit of a mission to figure out how to walk there but it turned out to be a pretty straight walk.
On the way we past a McDonalds which we were able to sneek a couple of photos of the inside before getting told 'no photos, no photos!'.Again the Trevi fountain was packed, makes it quite hard to get decent photos as you constantly have people walking in front of you but we managed! Made our way to the front of fountain turned our backs, tossed a coin over our sholder and made a wish..hehe. Wonder where all that money goes... After a little rest in front of the fountain it was time to head home for a rest - my feet were killing me, and it was getting rather hot and humid with the cloud cover.
Just near our Hotel we stopped at a tiny cafe for a latte and cappucino.. (quite a no no to have anything but espresso after lunch but i'm sure they are use to the tourists!). Headed back to our room for a well earned rest..
For dinner we just headed across the road to Da Giovanni, it advertises its been there since 1948 and the décor sure proves that point. The elderly Italian waiter also looked like he'd been there since 1948… I ordered ravioli de ricotta e spinich and Dad had a roast chicken and potato. My ravioli was soooo delizioso! What was also exciting was that whole time we spoke Italian to the waiter, although not a great deal, that was still exciting he didn't have to start speaking English to us! We also had 1/2litre of house red which was also good.
To work off dinner we decided to go in search of gelato.. which we found quite a way away but it was worth it, I had a hazelnut one and Dad had a tiramisu and melon…yum yum… on the way to and from the gelato we passed 2 McDonalds which we went in and snuck some photos.. certainly very different looking then at home, but mostly the same menu..
I've put up all the photos from today… until tomorrow… Buona notte! x
