Having a couple of days to relax in Arequipa was great! With a massage, cooking course & a visit to the market, I really felt like I was on a holiday. I was lucky to experience a night out with a few of the locals too. There were a couple of lads who worked in the hostel and invited me out on my last day. It was a fun evening. On Friday 17th, Alex and I walked to another mirrador which was North of the main town. We managed to find a good spot in the fields which had a great view of the city and the valley. We were also supposed to be able to see volcano Misty, but there were a little too many white clouds floating around! After tucking into our picnic, a school bus driver stopped to offer us a lift back to the main road. At first I thought it was a micro because there was a lady in the van too with a small baby, but I soon realised that he was just helping us out because he said that there were not many micros that pass by. How kind.
By 2.30pm I had said goodbye to my hostel friends and Alex and I were on our way to the small town of Corire which was about 3 hours away. The journey went quick and the seats were comfortable. When we first arrived, we attempted to get information about the next bus, but failed big time...everyone was telling us different things, different times, that we could & couldn't get direct buses from here - and then we struggled to make any sense from the man in the bus office. We couldn't really tell if he was just very strange and couldn't talk properly or if he had a little too much to drink! He looked scary too, like one of those murderers you see in scary films. So we gave up and had some dinner at the plaza instead. It was so nice to see everyone was just chilling in the plaza, kids were playing, lads were chatting...very different so home where most people would be sitting in front of the TV. I much prefer this kind-of life! After our rice dish, we went looking for some dessert and got chatting to some Mormons who were out in Corire to spread the word. It was so interesting talking to them, and they invited us in to have some traditional dessert with them. It was delicious and it was so interesting to hear about their faith and their beliefs.
The next day was interesting...it took us 2 hours of walking and we still couldn't find the rocks! We were literally in the middle of a dessert and had no idea where to go, so we decided to head back to the village close by and ask for them to call a taxi. It was getting hot, we wouldn't have survived walking much more. A taxi kindly came along and took us to the rocks...ok so we went almost in the opposite direction! And the locals said that it was easy to find! Never, never with me, I ALWAYS like to get lost first. Anyway the rocks were good - the Inca's had drawn so many different signs and images on the rocks, and some were huge! I have taken pictures of the images to research what they all mean or if the drawings are meant to tell a story. In the afternoon we grabbed some lunch and I made a quick decision to leave this strange town and head to Ica. So Alex and I parted ways - until we meet again in Lima anyway.
