We had a relatively easy journey to start the day - 9:15 taxi then a 3 ½ hour bus ride to Cappadocia. It was quick and problem free and we were in our hotel in Goreme just after lunch.
We have 4 days here and so we used Mustafa the hotel owner to help us plan our time here. After this, we set off to have a look round Goreme. Goreme is a small village with volcanic rocks everywhere - known locally as fairy chimneys. It is an amazing, unique landscape.
We went on to Goreme open air museum -a set of early Christian rock churches carved into the hill side. It is very good but very popular with tour groups. It reminded us of the Valley of the Kings in Egypt. The frescos inside were well preserved for their age (2nd to 11th centuries). The churches had been well hidden from all of the possible persecutors.
We set off to walk home via one of the valleys with the volcanic scenery. It was very pleasant to start with but then tried to find our way up a steep ridge back into the village - Ken made it but us mere mortals ended up going back and round the long way.
In the evening, we went to a restaurant recommended by the hotel owner. It turned out to be the worst meal in Turkey - our mistake was having the fixed price menu - cold baked beans, stingy portions - overall very poor quality.
