Well we have had another eventful few days!
After a truly horrible night bus from Chiang Mai to Bangkok - 12 hours, overnight with seats that recline so much that you can't put your legs in the space between the seat in front and your own! An American guy fell asleep on Katherine too.
We arrived in Bangkok at about 5:30am with very little sleep we got a taxi to the bus terminal, then got a bus at about 6am to Kanchanaburi which was another 3 hr journey. So we arrived in Kanchanaburi at about 9am and we think it must be the hottest place on earth. We managed to get to our hotel, too tired to haggle much so we got ripped off. I say 'hotel' but this place was pretty much the most disgusting place we have ever been in. As we walked in there was the overwhelming smell of damp so the lady showing us in got some air freshener which she helpfully sprayed around. The sheets were lovely for us too - they had some brown muddy stains, Katherine's had a pubic hair and mine had some lovely rips in which set off the whole dirt motif nicely.
We also had two or three fairly sizeable spiders which I whipped with a blanket whilst Katherine attacked them bravely with her shoe. We also had to hose down the bathroom as there seemed to be bits of... well s*** I suppose everywhere.
So once we cleaned the bathroom I got into the (cold) shower which you would think would be refreshing given the intense heat but somehow not when I saw something ou t of the corner of my eye which turned out to be a toad. A TOAD! A bloody toad in our bathroom. That was the last straw and it took us about 45 tense minutes to trap it under the bin by the hole that the water drains out, hoping it would escape.
We then continued our ordeal by walking the 15 or so minutes to the River Kwai Bridge but it was really just too much. We are so unimpressed with Kanchanaburi, its people, its toads and the town itself we went home and got some dinner and went for a well deserved Chang.
We did however meet some very nice people, a nice Canadian who helped us with our toad situation (it had escaped from the bucket and COME BACK INTO THE BATHROOM!) and a really nice Thai guy. So that was nice.
After a not so restful night's sleep we woke up and decided that we were sick of Kanchanaburi and wanted to go to the islands in the South. So we got a three hour bus to Bangkok, a taxi to the airport, booked a last minute flight and we were off. We arrived in a town called Surat Thani at about 9pm and had to wait for a couple of hours for our night ferry. We then spent a very un-restful 8 hours lying on lifejackets on some decking trying desperately to sleep (it was bloody cold) and we finally, FINALLY made it to Ko Samui this morning.
So from now on it's all white sandy beaches and blue water - we really can't believe how warm the water is here it's like a bath. WE LOVE IT! We are very sunburnt today so hopefully that will fade for round two tomorrow as we are hoping to move to a beachfront bungalow. We are planning to have a few days here then move to another island - Ko Pha Ngan - for a couple of days before we go back to Bangkok then to Cambodia on Saturday.
So there we go, you can't say we aren't having any adventures. Also, whilst we are not actually at the place in the picture (that's Krabi) that's what it looks like where we are.
Enjoy England! xx
