Well things are really happening in thailand now!
We are no nlonger in Bangkok, we left yesterday morning after having a lovely pancake and fruit breakfast from a street vendor before seeing them chuck a rat they caught into the bin!
We got an early morning train to Ayutthaya which used to be the capital of Thailand centuries ago and now has loads of old temples and ruins and things. The train we got was third class (15B for 3 hours - that's about 20p!) and quite interesting as it was only Thai people on it so we attracted quite a lot of stares as the only Westerners - something that has carried on since arriving in Ayutthaya.
The guesthouse we are in at the moment is lovely - way nicer that the last one. It's a sort of old Thai wooden house that you have to take your shoes off before you go in inside - lovely and quaint. Also we have air conditioning which is a luxury! And two friendly little geckos that run around in our room. We didn't do anything last night really as this place is bit of a downer after Bangkok - everything seems to close at about 9pm! So early to bed for us.
Today we rented bikes (pedal, not motor) to explore Ayutthaya with. We tried to walk around yesterday but it is massively sprawled out and takes ages to get from place to place. So for less than a pound we got two bikes with nice little baskets on the front to ride around all day! We visited about 3 of the major temples in Ayutthaya because it was just too hot to go to anymore, we also went to the temple in the picture which is called Wat Mahtet which has the Buddha whose head has been taken over by tree roots - it's an iconic image which you have probably seen!
We also learnt some things about crazy Thai drivers like not to hesitate when crossing the road (or riding into it) as it just confuses them and if you assume they'll stop when you get into the road they usually do! It was definitely an experience riding a bike around and by the end of the day we had started to enjoy it and were quite sad to take our bikes back to the rental place.
We also had our first experience with a Thai doctor. Katherine got about 20 mosquito bites on her legs on Saturday which didn't seem to be doing too well in the Thai heat & dust and one on her ankle was particularly swollen and getting worse (and darker!) so we have just come from a doctor. We did go into somewhere that we thought was a doctor's surgery first but the lady looked a bit shocked when Katherine showed them her wound and started shaking her head at us so we guessed we were in the wrong place! When we did find a doctor and Kat had stopped showing her wounds in random places he was very nice and spoke really good English which I'm sure made Kat feel loads better when she had to have an injection into her bum cheek! I think that's something neither ofus will forget in a while. She's also got a course of antibiotics so hopefully she will be on the mend very soon and we can look forward to some trekking in Chiang Mai.
We are in Ayutthaya tonight and tomorrow in the day (for another of Kat's arse injections) then tomorrow night we will be getting onto an overnight train for the 13hr journey to Chiang Mai. We have booked berths so we can sleep on the train which will be interesting to say the least so watch this space.
We were going to upload some pictures bbut forgot our cameras so maybe tomorrow depending on how Kat is feeling but it may be a quiet day.
Hope you're all okay, lots of love
