Salvador was one of two of my least favorite visited spots I went to in South America. I feel like it had so much potential though. I was only there for 3 days and I was there right after Rio and right before I headed off to the Amazon jungle. It was the beginning of my trip and I was really excited about my adventures.
I stayed at another Che Legarto hostel right on the main coastal street and about 5 blocks from the lighthouse.
Lets just put it out there... Salvador has NOTHING for anyone unless they are there celebrating Carnival. (Which I learned when I was there that Carnival is mainly celebrated in Salvador not Rio).
While I was there they were doing construction on buildings and the streets preparing for Carnival, which was coming to town like 2 weeks after I was there.
The lighthouse was nice to enjoy for like an hour or two. The beach was right there but was dirty and the weather wasn't nearly as nice as Rio so the beach wasn't calling my name like it was the days prior in Rio. Pretty much the only thing to do was on the other side of the city and that was to walk around at the Mercado Municipal (flee market), so I had to figure out how to get there and so I walked. I walked about 5 miles by myself, souly on sense of direction. I took the elevator down the port area where the market was then the harassment by the vendors started. (Not anything a SWF couldn't handle though).
I got my sisters some nice necklaces there, with some smart negotiations), and walked around a bit more, then headed back. I think that was the most eventful/cultural thing I did in Salvador.
I remember I ran across a big mall that was near my hostel, ate there one time for lunch, and a pizza place one time in a neighborhood I had no business being in near my hostel also. I also remember eating an acai bowl at a place on the main coastal street.
I left far too early the 3rd day to make my flight(s) out to THE JUNGLE.
I don't know if I'd go back, even for Carnival. I'd much rather spend Carnival in Rio than Salvador...and so that was Salvador.
