What Katie did next
Good Morning Vietnam! We're in Saigon, and it's crazy. We arrived here yesterday after getting a flight from Danang (near Hoi An). So that's our 6th flight of the trip, or something ridiculous. But when the 1 hour flight costs less than the 26 hour train journey, it would be silly not to fly really, don't you think?
Hoi An was lovely. Really small town on the coast with a couple of (apparently) lovely beaches - we never made it there because our $6 dollar a night hotel had a really nice swimming pool) - some great restaurants, and absolutely no night life. To make up for the lack of excitement in that area I decided to take full advantage of what Hoi An is renowned for - shopping. Actually, not really shopping, but having any item of clothing you could ever want taior made for you, for ridiculously cheap. So I got: 3 tops, 2 pairs of trousers, 3 skirts and 1 jacket for about $60 dollars (around 30 quid). Crazy. And sure they might not be made from the best quality fabric, but they are made well, and they do fit. My bag is now feeling the strain though, and I still have to lug it around for over 3 weeks. Hum....
So that was Hoi An. And now we're in Ho Chi Minh City, or Saigon, which is a pretty cool place. There are certainly some less nice areas around, but we've managed to find the posh district with all the expensive bars and restaurants to hang around in. Of course.
This morning we went to the Cu Chi tunnels, which was a really good trip, although cut short because our guide got us lost. And yes, in case you wondering, there are still land mines in Vietnam. I don't really have time to write about the history of Cu Chi, but it's really interesting, so read up if you want to know more, or take a look at Si's website (www.statraveljournals.com/pie), because he describes it all far better than I could. Thanks Si!
This afternoon we're lazing around a bit cos we're all a bit exhausted, and tomorrow is going to be another site seeing day. Saturday is going to be wicked because, with my new found love of boats, we're going on another two day boat tour. This time along the Mekong delta, all the way into Cambodia, so it works out perfectly for the next bit of our trip.
little notes to people:
Anna - U know u told me about the 'happy' pizza places in Phnom Penh? Well we've found a 'Special' Spring roll place here. We're not going to venture inside though.
Nottingham Girls and Boys - hope you're all having an amazing last few weeks. Congratulations and enjoy the ball. Also, happy early Bday to caz - I'm bound to forget nearer the time.
