What Katie did next
Hey hey! We're in Cambodia, and obviously it's pouring with rain. Big suprise. BIG suprise. Actually, we've had a good couple of days of sun, resulting in what some might say is a slight tan (and others might call burnt). So here's what I've been up to since I last wrote:
1) We went to the 'War Remnants' museum in HCMC. It was probably the most distressing experience of my life to date. Sure it was clearly very one-sided and very anti-american, but you just can't deny that the exhibitions they've created are based on things that did happen, and they were horrid. Really horrid. I took some photos and I'll post them on the site sometime in the next few days, but be aware that the photos I took aren't very nice.
2) We also randomly bumped into a few of Lauren and Laura's friends, so went out with them, which was cool.
3) Then we did another fun little excursion down the Mekong Delta and into Cambodia. And it rained. A lot. And I know I always say that, but this was far worse than any other time because this time we were in the middle of a huge river in a rickety wooden boat, and there was literally no visability. Lauren didn't help the situation much by constantly saying 'we're going to capsize and drown, we're going to capsize and drown...'
4) On this trip I met my double. He's a guy, so it doesn't really count I guess, but the similarities are scary: we're both left handed, both a bit geeky, both have the same diary, the same muji bag, the same head torch (yes head torch - i'm cool and you know it), we both use our hands to talk, we both did politics, we're both incredibly good-looking (some might even say he's better looking than me...!) etc. etc. He's now turned into our surrogate big brother, which is nice, even for a short period.
5) A note for my mother and Jacq: On this trip I also met some snakes. And took photos. So be warned. I also drank snake wine (pleasant, although a slightly fishy taste - I assume that's the snake).
6) And another point from the Mekong Delta: At one point we got on these little rowing boats for about 2 hours, manned by a lovely (and very tiny) lady. We felt really sorry for her because really this was not a job for a woman (but of course it's only women that do these jobs because the men have far better things to do, such as drink and smoke), and so me and Lauren tipped her 50,000 dong (approx 1.7 pounds). We couldn't work out why she was so ecstatic with this, until we found out that these women only earn 5,000 dong a day. You do the maths.
7) We spent one short night in Phnom Penh before getting a far too early and yet suprisingly pain-free coach to Siem Reap, which is f*cking cool. We've spent one day at the temples already, and we're getting up at 4.30 tomorrow morning to see sunrise over Angkor Wat. We weren't even meant to be coming to Cambodia on this trip, and this is the reason why we decided to change our plans, and we don't regret it. At all. Seriously, this place is amazing. You'll see the photos.
And that is the last few days for you. And I'm absolutely loving what we're doing, but also can't wait to get to Thailand. I need a rest. And a tan.
p.s. we also randomly saw Finn from Hollyoaks in Phnom Penh. Was a little odd. He's a very tall man.
