We arrived at Villa de Leyva on 7th December which coincided with the Catholic festival of candles ( something to do with the Virgin Mary, who they’re pretty hot on). There were 25,000 people cramming into tiny cobbled streets and a main square with two men running around lighting fireworks off the back of a lorry. Lots of rainbow coloured candles in doorways and side streets full of fairy lights. We escaped one day to go off to another town, driving to a pottery workshop on the way. An old guy with a pottery wheel got me to make a bowl while two other old men were roasting a whole cow on a metal pole outside. Ween may be a better swimmer but I am a better potter and have found my new vocation!
Driving through a town with home made sausages hung up everywhere, we then drove up to a monastery full of fossils in the floors and walls. It was pretty impressive for a monastery but not very exciting so we went down to the town full of brightly painted pottery and murals on the walls. We gatecrashed the church in the square where lots of little girls were having their first communion in wedding dresses with parents looking really uncomfortable in suits too tight for them.
Next stop is Coffee Country, a 30 minute flight from Bogota.
