In 1887 there were only 122 inhabitants left on Easter island. Now pop over 5000 . Since 1960 s reconstruction of the moais has increased tourism. Learned much history today . Mostly fascinated with work if Patricia Vargas anthropologist my age who came here on 2 yr contract at age 23 and has never left. Spent the day from 830-5 touring the island with her. Her book called sacred sentinels will be published by u nm press this summer. Looking forward to seeing . She is retiring from active digs to write about her careers work. Quite an interesting ancient culture fought with wars, competition and quite amazing skills. These moais are made of volcanic rock and I saw quarry's and some in progress when suddenly stopped in 1600's. they were altars of former evaders on which they rayed for blessings. They quit constructing when war, illness and famine were overwhelming. Now it seems the reconstruction after the tsunami in the 60.s has helped to answer community needs.
Dance presentation tonight by local traditional dancers. Was fun. Enjoying fresh fish grilled to order and fresh Polynesian fruits.
The air is so clean and this is the most pure, fresh place I have ever visited.
Travel into night tomorrow and cross intl timeline. Will really be mixed up by then. Here as this is part of chile I am on home time.

Lucy Patricia sounds like someone you could spend a week with and not get bored. my favorite line in this bog is: The air is so clean and this is the most pure , fresh place I have ever visited, YUM! that alone would be worth the price of admission.
