The world´s biggest cake!
It was 59m long and is officially the largest cake ever baked according to the Guiness Book of World Records. Today we visited the bakery that made it. Lucky for us they ate the cake after they baked it, otherwise it´d taste pretty mouldy by now! Also luckily for us there were numerous scrumptious treats for us to try.... caramel biscuits, lemon merangue pie, oat cookies with chocolate chips, honey cookies, fruit pie.... mmmm. Perfect for munching on while cruising past the Chilean 7 lakes on our way to Valdivia.
The scenery was brilliant, though the weather was a little nippy. The sunshine from our volcano day had disappeared overnight and we were left with cold grey. Unfortunately this meant that we generally only saw lakes, rather than lakes and the spectacular volcanos behind them! But the grey gave the lakes an eerie silence which I quite enjoyed.
In the afternoon we stopped in Valdivia and watched several fat b******s lazing in the sunshine and taking the ocasional dip in the river. Kind of sounds like your average Italian or Greek resort town, but I´m talking about sea lions not German tourists! These guys were huge, much larger than our friends from the Galapagos. The male can weigh up to 450kg. This colony seem to be living a life of luxury. Only a stones throw from the fish markets (free food!) and with their own almost purposebuilt pontoons positioned perfectly in the afternoon sun, they didn´t have to do much to get by. They were remarkably agile on land for their size, though rather comical in their movements!
We also walked to the botanic gardens on the river and spent some time chatting in the sunshine. It was nice to relax after such a full day yesterday.
