Casa de Yoga!
Yes, Tim has done his first yoga class! But more on that later. First a quick update on how we got here...
We travelled from Valdivia through Puerto Montt, a large town in the Chilean Lakes District that the guidebooks literally describe as the perfect place to find transport for the next place you´re going to! Its basically a port town with links to Patagonia and up to the North of Chile. But we had a fantastic lunch here at a local cafe. The Chileans don´t have the most exciting national cuisine, but this was my kind of dish - a piece of fried salmon with a layer of grilled cheese, tomato and chorizo on top. We had a perfect view from the table of Monica VI, Monica VII and Monica VIII (probably the boats that had caught the fish that morning). I did wonder what happened to Monicas one through five, which led our travel mate Felicity to wonder why the boats all had the same name, "maybe there´s a husband out there who had a lot of making up to do with his wife!?".
After a brief stroll in the rain through the craft markets we headed on to Puerto Varas, and I fell rapidly in love. And this was even before I saw the view of the volcano and lake the next day in the glorious sunshine. Puerto Varas is a beautiful town with lots of quirky shops, cafes with real coffee (to Tim´s delight) and proper cakes, and a laid back relaxed feel. After sampling some of the said coffee and cake, we headed back to the Casa de Yoga for a home cooked meal with Felicity. Steak is very good in Chile and very cheap. It was great to be a little domestic again after spending so much time eating in restaurants.
Our second day in Puerto Varas began with a yoga class. Our generous host is a Yoga Instructer in his spare time and he worked the three of us quite hard. He also gave us a very sweet talking to about stretching more often before kneading Tim for an hour trying to release the energy from his back muscles. Tim threatened to leave me for him, but I managed to get him on the bus to Villa La Angostura in the afternoon!
If anyone is going to Puerto Varas its definitely worth staying at the Casa de Yoga. Our hosts were so welcoming and we were really made to feel at home. There were free eggs from the chickens in the back garden, a brilliant kitchen well stocked with the essentials, and cosy, comfy beds. The hostel only sleeps 7 as well so it had a really initimate feel.
