24km of fresh air and fantastic views!
The views on the pass from Chile to Argentina promised great things and boy did they deliver. We fell rapidly in love with Argentina very soon after the bus dropped us off in Villa La Angostura. The Argentinian lakes district is incredibly beautiful and we were lucky enough to see it in both glorious sunshine and wintery snow!
The glorious sunshine was had in Villa La Angostura. We spent the day walking along a peninsula in Lago Nahuel Huapi to the Bosque de Los Arrayanes - a forest with trees that are over 650 years old. The worn red bark felt like home to me - it reminded me of pink angophras - so it was like greeting old friends.
We lunched at the end of the peninsula overlooking the lake. We pretty much had it to ourselves and enjoyed the silence of the lake and the trees. The cloud rolled in and the rain came down, changing the landscape again.
On the way back along the path we stopped at a lake on the peninsula... a lake within a lake! We also headed up to some lookouts with views over Villa La Angostura and the rest of the lake. The scenery was brilliant! But we didn´t stay long as the wind had picked up and the rain was coming in.
Our hotel in Villa La Angostura was the best we´ve stayed in in South America. Bajo Cerro (http://www.bajocerohostel.com/home.htm). The architecture was very interesting, the staff were great and although it was a little out of town, it was nice to feel like we were in the greenery. Our room had a couple of skylights, plus a window looking through glass eves, past the stone chimney to the greenery beyond. Plus, the hot shower was fabulous!
It rained on our second day so we spent most of it playing cards before hopping on the bus to travel through the seven lakes route. We couldn´t see much through the rain, but we saw enough to know we wanted to come back.....
