Monday night gifted me with the best sleep I've had in two months, naturally having my own room and being in blissfully silent surroundings helped this very much. I woke up early Tuesday ready and raring for my first day of helping out. We first sat down to some breakfast - avocado (straight from the tree) on toast and proper ground bean coffee. Great start to a beautiful sunny day. Chris showed me around the farm which was much larger than I had expected and so impressive. They grow everything hydroponically which means the plans get a mix of the exact nutrients they need pumped into small troughs that they are all lined up in. This process means that the plants flourish as there is no competition to try and leach these mineral from the earth. This explains the massive basil plants, bigger than anything we could imagine growing at home! We picked an order for 4 kilos of basil which didn't take long at all, I filled some crates of tubs with sawdust for growing and we de-potted lots of plants not being used. We then had the task of cleaning the little containers the plants sit in which isn't a quick job but very therapeutic I found. That brought us to about 4.30 after which I clocked off and explored the little township. KatiKati is known as the mural town the reason for which becomes quite apparent after walking a few metres down the Main Street. It's a quiet but cute little town famous for kiwi production also. Later on that evening Chris made an awesome potato and coriander curry and we had a beer or two whilst listening to some really cool records. There was also a particularly striking sunset which I climbed the roof to get some shots of. I shall put them up soon!
