So arrived fairly latish to Kyoto . Didn't really have much energy but managed to convince myself to find the Floating Garden skyscraper building.
And I did! Although I didn't realise there was an underground passage so I went alllll the way around the big block instead of just going under it. But never mind!
The view was incredible. It looked more like a poster than real life. It was a wonderfully clear night so you could see right across the city. You could stay inside or go up one more floor and go out on to the 'floating' part outside, which was ring shaped. The floor was cool as it had solar systems and star constellations on it in glow in the dark paint. Very cool.
I took time staying there, just listening to music, having one of my 'I'm really here' moments. I suddenly felt extremely proud of myself. I've spent weeks travelling and navigating Japan by myself. Where English isn't the first language, with weird foods, not a lot written in English, using buses, trams, subways, railways, ferries and taxis to get where I want to be, ticket systems in Japanese, maps and station maps and stops in Japanese. And I'm damned nailing it. Go me.
Anyway, so I'm at this tower with an incredible view. And it dawns on me...I'm surrounded by couples..not just one or two. There is no one else who isn't part of a couple here. No families or anything else. Just. Couples.
And once I noticed, I couldn't not notice. I went back inside and sat for a while in the cafe, enjoying the view where it was warming, before heading out for food.
Ended up at McDonalds. Those shrimp burgers are good.
