Was picked up early in the morning ready for my 4 wheel drive adventure to Moreton island, which is an hour ferry ride off the coast of Brisbane. When the ferry landed we drove along a picturesque beach to our permanent camp site, dropped off our bags and went to the beach.
We went snorkelling around the ship wrecks they have planted all along the coast to encourage reefs and wildlife. It was really fascinating, but i think i have been spoiled by the great barrier reef as it wasnt a patch on that!! Snorkellings always good though and it was so nice to feel the sun on your back as you swam around.
We dried off and drove into the island up towards some sand dunes and went sand boarding! (see pic!) We each had a piece of chip board which you lay down on face first, hold onto the sides at the front and pull it up as much as you can to stop the sand flying in your face (doesnt work as your jetting down the dune but thats the supposed technique!) and then you get pushed off the top of the dune! The first dune we did was only about 75, high but high enough to start with! Was quite bumpy as loads of other people had boarded down it too, so later on we went to a more secluded, bigger dune which was softer and much easier on your hips as you shot down the sand.
That night we watched the sun set over the ocean and saw dolphins playing in the water, was really beautiful, and then we had an aussie bbq and toasted marshmellows over a camp fire before crashing out in the tents.
The next morning we had a hot breakfast before driving over to the biggest sand dune in the world in the middle of the island. Its only about 250m above sea level, but the biggest in the world none the less! We walked up it, which is really pretty as its actually really vegetated and green to my surprise, despite the sand. The view was lovely at the top and worth the walk!
We then went over to the lighthouse on the island and watched whales breaching and jumping in the ocean - was perfect. the sea and sky were so blue it almost hurt your eyes, the colours were so vibrant, ive never seen anything like it.
We drove to a freshwater natural lake and went for a swim and sunbathe and played frisbee in the water for a bit before back to the camp site to pack up and get the ferry back to the mainland, much in need of a de-sand and shower! Brilliant two days.
