Arrived in Brisbane on Monday (2nd) and after checking into my hostel i went on a walk into the city and down to South bank (pic above) - an artificial beach and essentially the Cairns lagoon of Brisbane. Its really pretty and well used by the public, there was a great atmosphere and it was really nice to sit in the sunshine by the water!
The next day I did the tourist things. I went to New Farm Park, a public park on the river from which has a lovely rose garden. On the map it looked as if it was just down the road from my hostel, a 15min walk or so i thought, so when i finally arrived 45mins later (without getting lost!) i decided that my perception of the map scale was slightly out.
From the park i caught the CitiCat - essentially a water taxi - along the river to the Botanical Gardens which are really pretty, and a nice escape from the noise of the city. I wandered around and also did a 30min tour of the Queensland Houses of parliament which are just across the road. There was just me and the tour guide so i had my own personal tour! Was really interesting.
Had a nosey into the museum of modern art before going back to the CBD and meeting Lynne for tea which was great. Then it was back to the hostel - my feet were so glad to be home having walked miles! - and packing for the island tomorrow.
