We arrived into Surfers Paradise during the night, to find it an extremely built up place - with a real fun vibe about it. Although many backpackers that we have come across say that surfers is too commertial, it was just what we needed!!! Our first day of Surfers was like playtime for us.. we ventured off to the Goldcoast American style water park of Wet N Wild. It was such good fun, the three of us were like little kids running round all the different rides. We slippery slid down water slides (one of which was almost verticle), dipped into the pools (one which had a wave machine, and others were small jicuzzis) and went down white water rapids on huge rubber rings!! It was hilarious. There was 2 rides we particularly liked, one was a ride for 2.. where you go down an almost vertical U shape in a 2 man tire, and one of the people has to go backwards!! It was scary!! The other was again in a huge 4 man tire, where you go through lots of tubes and then plummet into a big open ring shape - where you shoot upwards, then back down, then up.. it was awesome!!
We decided its a must that we go out drinking in Surfers, so after a few drinks in our hostel with practically all our hostel, we headed out! It was a really good night out, lots of dancing and drinking, and then we did the all time sin - and hit McDolalds!!Tut. We spent the rest of our time at Sufers chilling out on a few of its bustling beaches.. of course we went to its main beach, full of bikini clad bodies, surfers and bathers.. a pretty cool beach with a backdrop of scyscrapers and flashy buildings. On one day of our time here there was the Quiksilver and Roxy Pro Surfing competition going on... one of the biggest surf competitions in Australia - along side the Bells beah surf comp. Chris was really excited, but 5 minutes from Snappers Rock beach where the competition is held we overheard a guy on the bus being told that the swell wasn't big enough and so the surfers wont be going out that day - absolutely gutted. It would have been awesome as Kelly Slater was there - nine times world champion.. and it would have also been amazing to see a surf competition as famous as this out in Australia. Nonetheless we chilled for a while at this beach, soaking in all the atmosphere as there was all the surf manners and promotions going on still. The beach was beautiful.. quite a small cove and you could see the scyscraper buildings of Surfers Paradise on the skyline. Getting on the bus up to this beach also gave us a good chance of seeing more of the Gold Coasts beautiful beaches that we wouldnt have got to see otherwise, such as Kirra and Duranbah. The other half of the day was spent on the next bay round - Coolangatta beach, a huge beach, well kept and maintained, with lifeguards patrolling since there was quite a strong rip. After lazing around we headed back to our hostel to get packed and ready for our next stop - Byron Bay.
