Coffs harbour was just a one day stop off, to fill our last leg on the east coast, breaking up the journey to Sydney but we're glad we took a peak. Coffs Harbour is mostly known for its big banana. We had no idea what that was all about, but we knew we needed to check it out. We soon came to realise that there are alot of banana Plantations around ever since the first yellow fruit was grown here in the 1880's. The 'Big banana' seemed to be aimed at kids haha, with educational tours however we were only here to have a big banana split, and it was definitely worth the 8 dollar each bus ride!! Weirdly there were also winter sports such as ice skating and fake slope skiing here but Im not sure what all that was about.
Anyway from here we took a walking tour of the town and surrounding area. We walked all the way down to Park beach, which we walked right along until reaching the main harbour along the penninsular to Mutton bird island to get some views and an overlook of the harbour and town. The weather was not great at all but at least it was dry for us. Our lonely planet had recommended the fresh fish shop to get some fish and chips so we all ordered, not realising that Calamari isn't a kind of fish but is actually squid. I know, we're stupid but we're not big seafood fans, or actually should i say we weren't. So hungry we munched it down anyway. They looked like onion rings but were rings of squid instead and although we wouldnt have them again as it is quite chewy it wasnt to bad. Oops, I've just been told off for talking to much about food again haha!! So I'll move on. Actually i can't because thats all that we did here because of the crappy weather! As it was only a tiny place we headed on that night to Port Macquarie at the mouth of the hastings River. xx
