Santarem didn´t really appel to us that much so we decided to catch a bus to a small place called Alto do Chao which was about an hour from Santarem. We found a really nice pousada (guest house) where we got a chalet for the three of us for R$80. The town is tiny and really quiet but there is a lovely beach at the bottom of the road. We were relieved to be off the boat but Sarah and Neil became a little bit ill...and thats all i´m allowed to say other than i´m glad i avoided the food on the boat or maybe i was just lucky!
On Tuesday we hired some kayaks and headed out to a beach accross the lake. We didn´t quite make it... Neil recons he had a dodgy kayak because he kept tipping out of it. It was quite funny at first but then it got a bit frustrating and he ended up having to swim to the shore, pulling his kayak along behind him!
At tea time we went on John Lennons speed boat to another beach to watch the sunset. It was really nice and our guide, John Lennon was really friendly, he even gave us Portugese lessons in the sand. When they say something that you don´t understand, they write it down because obviously you will understand if it´s in writing....!!
