Two of my favourite friends, Kate and Sacha, arrived in Bangkok on 21st May to spend two weeks with me. For the first couple of days of their holiday, they explored Bangkok whilst I was in bed with severe diarrhea! On their third day, thanks to a course of antibiotics, I was feeling slightly better and we got an overnight train down to one of southern Thailand's ports - Surat Thani. The train was fantastic - luxury compared to India. Our beds were made up with a pillow, blanket and clean sheets, and there was even a dining cart which through the course of the evening turned into a disco with drunken Thais and foreigners dancing to cheesy music. We arrived at the port at 6am only to have to wait three hours for our boat. This luckily flew by thanks to a heated game of uno with a group of French lads. The boat journey was lovely - we sat on the deck and felt the sun on our backs and the wind in our hair. The sea was such a beautiful deep turquoise that I wanted to jump straight in!
On arrival in Koh Phangnan, we got a taxi with hundreds of others, all here to celebrate the full moon party. We stayed on a beach that I visited on my previous trip to Thailand, Haad Yuan, which can only be accessed by longtail boat. It really is paradise. With only a selection our beach huts, a couple of restaurants, bars and a shop, it has everything you need but is a complete escape from the hedonism and teen drinking on the majority of Koh Phangnan. We spent four nights here in a beach hut that overlooked the bay. Whilst I continued to recover from my stomach bug, Kate and Sacha endured the craziness that is the Full Moon Party where thousands of revelers congregate on a beach and get ridiculously wasted. I helped the girls nurse their hangovers the next day then we organized a group tour for the Saturday. The tour included an enjoyable elephant ride in the jungle, a trip to one of the worst and most non-descript temples I have ever seen, and a swim in a waterfall that had very little water. Needless to say, it was fairly disappointing but an experience never the less! On our final night in Koh Phagnan, we enjoyed a Thai massage and a few drinks before packing to leave for it's neighboring Island, Koh Tao.
