After a 45 minute flight from Trivandrum, India, we arrived in Sri Lanka with a driver waiting to collect us. He drove us in an aircondition minibus for about 3 and a half hours to Mango House - my sister Bex's beautiful Sri Lankan home. It was a real treat to have such a comfortable ride.
We commenced our week in Unawatuna with the hope that we would do our PADI course - to enable us to become qualified open water scuba divers! After a day of relaxing and catching up with Bex, Shaun and the boys, we did a day of theory at the scuba school. This involved 5 hours of videos and question answering. On both the second and third day, we were asked to drop into the centre to see if we were able to start learning to dive. Unfortunately, due to a couple of spells of bad weather, we were unable to. On day 4, after no diving again, we decided to cancel our PADI as were aware we need to move on due to our restricted time in Sri Lanka. We intend to pic it up further along in our trip.
After cancelling the PADI, we were then able to relaxing for our last fews days at Mango House. Unwatuna was absolutely beautiful - a small community surrounding a perfect palm-fringed beach with a selection of small shops and restaurants. We also enjoyed a day out to nearby Galle Fort. A clean, classy and very ralxing place filled with little shops and cafes. We also had some great views of the cricket from the ramparts. The water surrounding the fort was crystal clear.
We had an incredible week here and definitely could've stayed longer. It was really nice for me to spend time with my family and we really struggled to leave!!! Eventually, after a full week, we packed up and caught the local bus along the coast to the whale-watching beach of Mirissa.
