Kandy is Sri Lanka's second largest city. Set around a beautiful lake, it is famed for The Temple of The Tooth, which claims to hold the buddha's actual tooth and hundreds of buddhists visit it daily.
Kandy is the most picturesque city we have visted so far. Set in the hills, it is still moderately cooler than the coast and the hills surroundind the lake offer some incredible scenery.
We arrived in Kandy fairly late in the afternoon and struggled to get a room. We ended up in some random, dilapidated guest house on some random back street that housed cockroaches, spiders and only one other guest (unsuprisingly!). Needless to say, we did not sleep well that night and left as soon as we could in the morning. We managed to find a much better and cheaper room and immediately relaxed.
We spent our first day exploring the city centre, walking the entirity of the lake's circumference and enjoying homemade cake in the local bakers - really delicious with a pot of Ceylon tea!!!
The next day after an easy going morning, and a picnic by the lake, we rented a tuk tuk to take us to Millenium Elephant Orphanage. The views on the hour journey were breath taking once again. The orphange looks after just 8 elephants - most of which are old. It is run by a group of Sri Lankans and 30 western volunteers. Some stay for a week or two, others for months or years! It was lovely place and the elephants were cared for very well.
We got to bathe and ride an elephant whose name was Lakshmi. She starred in the 1997 Tarzan film so she knows plenty of tricks! It was incredible afternoon and provided us with memories we will never forget!
The next morning we left Kandy early to get the train to Colombo where we then caught a bus to a plae clled Negombo - beach town situated very near the airport. The place was dull and had a very polluted beach so needless to say there is no need for me to write a blog post about it!
Two days later we flew to Mumbai where we stayed the night before getting our flight to Bangkok!
