The Gili Islands were absolute paradise and possibly our favourite two weeks during our entire trip. Gili Trawangan is one of three very small islands situated off the north-west coast of Lombok. As the island is so small, there are no cars - only horses and carts or push-bikes to get around. On our journey over the Gii T (as the hip young travelling crowd call it), we made friends with a group of people from different parts of the UK. We all immediately hit it off and we spent most days hanging out on the beach together then enjoying cheap drinks of an evening at the Gili Hostel.
We eventually ended up spend 12 nights on Gili Trawangan. Our days were spent sunbathing, kayaking, paddle boarding (where you push yourself along on a surf board with a paddle),snorkeling, reading and cycling the entirety of the Island. We rented a bike each for our entre time which gave us the ability to find cheaper lodgings inland. Our room had a bed made of bamboo, an outdoor bathroom with pebble floor and a shower made of bamboo - it was fantastic. In the evenings we would watch films showed on big screens on the beach, eat at one of the many delicious restaurants or go to one of the many 3-weekly parties that took place on the island.
The snorkeling off Gili T was the best we had experienced, it was like being in a scene from finding nemo. The strong current allowed us to swim out 200m, then carry us round the island allowing us to see so much with little effort. We even saw turtles which was one of my highlights of the trip. They were such incredible and beautiful creatures, so calm and friendly.
After our 12 days of paradise, we moved onto another island named Gili Air for two nights. Less developed than Gili T, we stayed amongst the villagers in a nice room and got to sample a bit of traditional island life. The winds were very strong during our 2 days here, making swimming and snorkeling almost impossible. Feeling a bit bored of the beach, we were more than ready to leave after two weeks and head back to Bali. Our nearly 3 hour boat journey was stormy, rocky and wet. I'm glad it is the last boat I will be getting on for a while.
