Hi everyone!
Sorry this has taken a while but we arrived safe and sound in Hong Kong on Thursday morning after an 11 and a half hour flight. It was surprisingly OK, I was well impressed with the in-flight entertainment, we even saw The Devil Wears Prada before it came out in the UK! (I wasn't overly impressed). We eventually got to our hostel in Kowloon but we struggled with the backpacks - this is going to take some getting used to!
3 words to describe Hong Kong - busy, humid and smelly! But we loved it. There was so much to see and do. We were jet-lagged the whole time there but we managed to fit a lot in. On the first night we went to the Avenue of Stars, a bit like Hollywood but we didn't know any of the people apart from Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee! And we saw the light show on Hong Kong Island where all the huge buildings are lit up in different colours, it was really pretty. We went to get food, Chinese of course, and managed to find something edible on the menu - ox penis and testicle was a bit off putting! It smells a lot like Chinese takeaways at home everywhere, think I may be put off for a while!
Next day we got the ferry over to Hong Kong island and went up the Victoria Peak which is the highest point on the island and saw the amazing view of all the buildings. I've never been to New York but it's like that. It was a bit muggy so we went up there again at night and it looked even better all lit up. We also went to the Mid-Autumn lantern festival which was pretty cool, we saw some Cantonese opera (not a fan) and a Mongolian dance act (far more entertaining). My favourite bit was when we saw a little boy having a wee in a plastic bag his mom was holding! Yep it's definitely a very clean place!
We overslept on Saturday but when we finally got up we went over to Lantau island and on a cable car journey through the mountains to visit the biggest outdoor buddha that's sitting down and made of bronze (something like that!). It was pretty cool to see this huge buddha in the middle of the mountains though. While we were up there we met a guy from Solihull, random! Got the bus down and there were cows wandering around in the roads, not seen that before, sheep maybe but not cows! We missed the ferry back so we went for something to eat with him and I ate with chopsticks, there's a first! We got someone else's order by mistake and had a plate with chicken, and the chicken's HEAD on it! Nice. Chinese beer is good stuff. We went to the Temple Street Night Market and for a couple of cocktails in Kowloon when we got back. And, we went to a toilet which turned out to be a hole where you hold on to rails on the wall, you didn't warn me about that Tangsta!
Sunday was our last day in HK. We went for a walk in Kowloon Park, it's really pretty, and we stumbled across a kung fu display. It was really really good, we stayed there watching for ages. The little kids were so cute, don't know how they remembered the whole routine! The best bit was definite the dragon dance, it was so lifelike! The hostel we were staying in was OK, but the toilet was in the same room as the shower, which wasn't a proper shower, just a shower head in the sink. Lucky we weren't expecting luxury!
That's it for now, we're in Australia now and all is good, I'll update this again after we've been on the safari to Ayers rock!
Lots of love xxxxx
