It's really strange that KL seems so different to how it felt just a few weeks ago. I guess after visiting increasingly poor countries - Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar .... Malaysia just feels so much more organised & 'sanitised'. I had a double take when I came out of the airport & saw Body Sop & Starbucks - the first "Westernised' style outfits I've seen in a while.
Arrived at the hotel after midnight to find my new room partner Lynn (Mrs Mence!) tucked up in bed. Soon disrupted her neat & tidiness with my mucky backpack & the countless carrier bags of my wardrobe.
Had breakfast with Jess & her daughter Phoebe. So surreal that we have all travelled from different parts of the world to meet up - Jess from UK, Phoebe from Penang, me from Myanmar, Mrs Mence from NZ & on Tuesday amy will come from Bali!
Mrs Mnce had planned an action packed & fun filled afternoon for us. First to see a Hindu shrine in caves with a 5 legged elephant which turned out to be a cow ... & dead. Then an adrenaline pumping train ride up (the sort you see along the prom in Spain!) to see some very friendly monkeys (& a very nasty man with a stick), then for a SUPERB (as advertised) seafood supper. The highlight though was going out on a little boat just after dark to see fireflies. They were really amazing - it was as if the trees at the side of the river were filled with thousands of tiny little Christmas lights.
Goodbyes to Phoebe & preparations for our trip to Sarawak, Borneo tomorrow. We hadn't realised when we planned this (thanks Stan!) that it would be the monsoon season .... & I have given away my raincoat!
