Happiness Is The Road
This had been one of the best camp sites we had stayed on but onward we must go around this beautiful country. We went to have a look around Port Fairy first thing. We drove to park at a road called Rogers Place and took the obligatory photo. It was just on the edge of town near the marina and was a good place to park as the town was very busy. It is the Australia Day weekend and is the end of the big school summer holidays. Monday is a public holiday. There was a big market in the town with loads of nice stalls selling interesting stuff and food. We got some sugar free salt 'n' vinegar flavour almonds and some really good fresh bread. It had no sugar, vegetable oil or preservatives in it, the way all bread should be. It tasted delicious. After Port Fairy it was time to go and start the Great Ocean Road. This is a scenic, winding, coastal road that starts at Warrnambool and goes all the way to Torquay, which is not that far from Melbourne. The start of the road is pretty ordinary and is mainly through farm land. After a while we noticed the turn off for Bay Of Islands which is where the really scenic bit begins. The scenery here is simply stunning, rocky pillars in the sea being pounded by the ocean. It took our breath away and it's just going to get better and better. After Bay Of Islands we stopped a short drive away at Bay Of Martyrs where there was a fantastic beach. We sat here for a while and sunned ourselves. The weather was just perfect today in the low 20's. The only thing ruining the mood were these big flies that kept biting us so after a while we admitted defeat and retreated back to the camper. Our next stop was Peterborough where we had booked a camp site for the night. We're having to book ahead at the moment as everywhere is just so busy. We only just managed to get in tonight and tomorrow night. We had a look round Peterborough, a cute little place, and had a walk along the beach. No nasty biting flies here thank goodness. The camp site was packed and we didn't like the vibe of it but only one night here and it's onward further down the Great Ocean Road.
