Happiness Is The Road
It was very cold last night. The coldest night in ages. It was socks and two sleeping bags. I wasn't bothered though as it's very cosy in the camper. I had quite a long drive today, about 350 kilometres, to the Flinders Ranges. I hit the road at ten and drove up through Whyalla and on to Port Augusta. I stopped here for some petrol and to get some food. I noticed a IGA Foodland on the way through which was good. The road was very winding out of Port Augusta but soon opened up into some long straight sections up to the Flinders mountain range. I went through a place called Quorn (only veggie sausages here I bet!) and on to a little place called Hawker. From here it wasn't too far to where I had planned to stay the night, Rawnsley Park Station Camp. As I got closer to the camp I got a better view of the mountains and the scenery became more and more stunning. The camp was in a wonderful location, surrounded by the bush and with a view of the mountains. The camp was very quiet. It ended up being me, a tent, a caravan and possibly a couple of cabins occupied and that was it! I chose my own spot with an excellent view and a fire ring. The guy at reception was very helpful and gave me some maps and told me about all the walks and the scenic drives in the area. We also had a chat about the Prairie Hotel at Parachilna where I had planned to go in a couple of nights. They do a Feral Feast there (Kangaroo, Emu, Camel etc etc) and he highly recommended it. I then got set up in my spot and went for a swim. They had a swimming pool here and I was the only one in it. It was great as it was getting fairly hot, probably around 30 degrees here today. This place was so quiet, it was nice to just relax and listen to all the birds and wildlife. I saw a couple of kangaroos in the distance but there weren't any on the camp. After a lovely tea I got the fire going. It was great to be able to do this because even if there are fire rings, in most places during summer there is a fire ban. Fires were allowed here though and I soon had a wonderful crackling fire going. It is just so wonderful to watch a real fire burn and glow. I caught some orbs on photo as well. This is one of the best places I have stayed.
