It's our last day in Nanjing. Yesterday we headed to the Memorial Hall of the Massacre and found that it was closed on Mondays. Great... So we headed to the botanical gardens instead. Unfortunately, the gardens were a rather sad state of affairs and we spent the day wandering around it in confusion, trying to figure out where the flowers and stuff actually were.
Today we checked out, stored our bags, and headed for the hall again. Man oh man is THAT a depressing way to spend the day. I got some great pictures of the statues and the mass grave. Everything else was off limits to pictures though. It was very interesting.
We picked up some steamed meat buns on the way back and have been lounging in the hostel. Soon we will head out in search of dinner/popsicles and then we'll be catching a late train (10 something PM) to the mountain. We're in the hard seats for 7 hours overnight and we arrive around 5am. So we'll be purchasing tickets to Shanghai when we arrive and then going in search of our hostel. It will be really early, so unless they have someone at the desk AND the room is free, we may have to wait till noonish till our room is available. Ahh the hostel life. I've almost finished my book just waiting for things... and it's 700 pages long! What will I do when I'm done???
My stomach has finally recovered from that iced drink disaster so I'm feeling a bit more up to the task of eating. I had porridge for breakfast that was actually really good!
Amy and I made a friend in Beijing who happens to live in Shanghai (the texan) and he got back to me saying he'd play tour guide for a day and show us some of the sights. Fun! Shanghai, unlike the mountain, will mostly be spent shopping. Not really focused on scenary there.
Now we go in search of tasty treats. We gave in and had KFC yesterday and it was actually good. Original recipe translates across the board. PLUS I got to have a KFC egg-strawberry tart. Yum!!
Missing you all!
