Today it begins: I am not exactly back on the road but this is the point where I stop with the same monotonous routine, meals and loneliness. In just over 5 days I will make my way south to Bolivia which means I have 5 days left here in Peru. I figure I will make the most of them, sample some bizarre and unique foods and see some new places. First thing find a strange fruit by the name of Lucuma that can only be found in Peru. I headed to the market early and luck was on my side I found Lucuma and went about trying it: moderately sweet with a texture somewhat like mango and somewhat like avocado - overall impression delicious and have been told its best when drank as a juice. For lunch I decided that seen as Huanchaco (the town I am living in) is the birthplace of Cebiche I would find a nice restaurant to try it. Unfortunately when I went looking and asking none of the restaurants were making it today, however I had seen a place up in the sticks that had a cebiche sign so I went and asked. I was in luck for about $2 I got one of the most delicious meals I have eaten in Peru handsdown. First came the a plate of canchita: Peruvian popcorn - grilled corn kernels covered in salt - more like a hard nut then actual popcorn and ver addictive. I wasn't expecting a big portion of Cebiche as I had gone for the small plate but what came out blew me away: a plate full of Cebiche, steamed yuka and root vegetables, lettuce, onions and more canchita. The cebiche was soaked in limes and mixed with a spicy seasoning and almost melted in my mouth, the thinly sliced red onions that accompanied it gave some crunch to the dish whilst the root vegetable and steamed yuka provided the body of the meal. I don't usually eat potatoes or root vegetables but I had to try the steamed yuka and it was delicious, soft and with a smoke flavour. The lady running the restaurant was doing an awsome job all by herself taking care of meals, 2 young kids and the bar. I had her little girl take some photos of me and then I Ofcourse had to let her play around on my iPhone. I thanked her and promised I would be back again - I can't believe how good the meal was and all for less then $2 - about what I usually spend to make my lunch. After lunch the sun had come out so I went for a walk around the town and enjoyed the warmth of the sun. I don't know what has happened but I feel more alive today, excited and ready to be back on the road. It's true variety and trying new things really is the spice of life and where our joy originates. I will set myself a new goal to everyday try something new whether that be foods, places or meeting new people. In the afternoon I sat on the beach and watched the sun go down - a first since being here in Huanchaco.
