After a much needed rest and a belly full of food I was up early today ready to check out the city of Penang. First up myself and Sam went to the food market to buy some local produce as I would be cooking for the family tonight.
The food market was a very interesting mix of Malay, Chinese and Indian foods - what I found very interesting is the Indian presence here, considering only about 10% of the population are Indian there seems to be a lot of Indian goods and services on offer.
After the food market Sam dropped us off at his place and then myself Sherilyn and their two kids Adam and Isabelle went to Georgetown (the historical old town) for a walk around.
Georgetown has a very old British / Bohemian style almost elohant and very picturesque. We visited the Chinese settlement whereby whole Chinese families live out on Jettys built out into the channel - very interestingly 100s of members of the same family will live on each jetty (for example the Wong family occupied about 80 houses on the jetty we visited).
Next Sherilyn brought some fruit, cuddle fish, tofu and nuts in a spicy sauce concoction. It was absolutely wonderful but too good so I am sure it couldn't of been too healthy.
Next stop was little India and because the Indian celebration today the streets were packed and I imagine what I experienced was very similar to that of actual India.
We then visited this incredibly beautiful coffee house, bistro, bakery / bar - such a huge building all in the original old style with some of the nicest settings I have seen any where.
On the way back to the car I found a Chinese wholesaler and too my suprise found one of my new favorite snacks from Thailand: rice crackers with peanut - the guy was so nice and let me try all the different flavours so how could I say no I had to buy me some and before I leave I am sure I will be back to stock-up.
In the afternoon I went for a walk to the waterfront to see the ocean for it has been quite a while. Whenever I sit near the ocean I get a warm feeling of home and know its just on the other side of this great ocean.
Soon it was time to head back and start cooking dinner - on the way I picked up a papaya and two Guava fruits for 50c and I was very happy about that!
So tonight for my host family I cooked my famous Tortilla Australianis/Malay - in this one Boiled carrot and potato, garlic fried onions, grated corgette, creamy corn (a first) and a few slices of cheese. Unfortunately the family were very hungry and I could see they were getting impatient so I had to half the cooking time - this making it a little soft on the inside by they all enjoyed and I was glad I could do this small act to thank them for their wonderful hospitality.
The rest of the evening we sat around, chatted, played card games - it was like being with my own family! Thankyou Kang family!
