Including today, there is exactly 11 days left for my China vacation. This is the longest I've been away from home and I think I am getting home sick. After spending just over two weeks in China, I really appreciate what Canada has to offer. We live in a great country, and we don't suffer the same hardships as some Chinese People.
Our last day on the Gorge was fun. The cruise ship docked near a river city (Yiching?) When a Chinese Cruise ship docks, it's usually next to others and when you exit, you cross through 3 or4 ships to get to the dock. The dock led us to a newly built dragon boat facility were we placed on life jackets with a paddle next to you. I said, "great, I've avoided participating in dragon boat races in Ottawa, and now the tour is forcing me to race". I was very pleasantly surprised to find this dragon boat was motorized!
There was a mini race were people got to practice their skills, I was annoyed by a little Chinese kid who thought it was funny splashing water at me. This was a great little tour, we really got to see the height of the gorge in these small boats. When we made it to shore, we had about a 1 km hike up (100+ steep steps) and around the cliffs, it provided us with another spectacular view of the land formation. I was afraid to take out my camera since I'm a little uncoordinated and the pathway was very narrow. You won't find this excursion in any travel books since it opened 1 year ago and they cn only offer this when the water levels are high.
These past few days while traveling down the gorge, we didn't notice any birds flying in the sky (ie no seagulls). May thinks that with such a large population, most of the birds have been eaten. Perhaps, it stems from the fact the Yangtze River is very polluted, I've seen a lot of man made waste floating in the water, ie Plastic bottles.
The last stop of the tour was a visit to the 3 Gorges Dam. It's a spectacular man made structure. It's worth visiting.
We arrived into Wuhan late from Yichang & had supper at a neighborhood named Night Food Street. It's a restaurant strip with roving singers, musicians and people selling flowers. The food we ordered was from the Hubei region - lots of peppers & very spicy.
Tomorrow is a travel day to Guilin ...
