well, the first 24 hours in dubai have been interesting....
managed to get to the hostel after the taxi driver ripped me off. how typical i thought. altho have got 2 taxis today and they were sweet, apart from one guy rubbing my arm all the way back to the hostel...anyhoo! made friends with a korean woman whos been travelling through the middle east on her own for 5 months whos in my room with me. man i thought i was riske! got talking and its good sharing a room with her as she seems to be kind and genuine. also shared last night with 2 woman from jordan, who were awake until 2am!! i had to eventually ask them to turn the lights out, then they woke us up at 6am. talk about insomniacs.
went on a big bus tour today and covered heaps of ground. so many scyscrapers and desert and construction, it almost feels like the city was only discovered yesterday and they madly need to get as many buildings up as poss. also saw the tallest building in the world. looks like its gunna fall over if you ask me. checked out the bigggest mall in asia with the ski slopes. didnt see the slopes as i had to pay full skiing price to get in. but i did see a weird fountain and music display while randomly waiting for the bus. i couldnt help look around to see peoples reactions to ensure it wasnt some kind of sick joke :D anyhoo, went walking the souks in the evening - just a whole lot of rubbish for sale in my opinion. apart ofcourse from the gold bracelet i found in the gold souk which cost 2000US. yeah it was VERY nice. not exactly in my price bracket though.
overall a pretty vibrant city, i do like it. the people are very nice and dont harrass you to buy things.. i suppose i better enjoy it as india is gunna bea whole different ball game.. the problem is food...theres NOWHERE to eat middle of the range. like in asia there were a thousand restaurants especially aimed at cheapskate tourists, here theres nothing. i had to resort to a wimpy burger and fries. yeah, healthy and tasty alright. ended up waiting an hour for a taxi home too as no one would take me to the hostel. almost cried. but contained myself once i got a taker. boo.
overall have not had too much attention from men. they stare but they are pretty respectful and hardly ever yell or say anything to you which is good (apart from the seedy taxi driver ofcourse). and i learnt today that dubai is the safest city in the world because if you get caught doing something you basically get your hands cut off! so no one dares. its brilliant. slip and we'll remove your hands! bwahaha! or am i making that up? well the crime thing is true.
i'm off on a desert safari tomorrow which is most of the day - should be good. hope my dearest paul made it safely to delhi. only another 36 hours and we will see eachother again, so not too bad.
did i mention its 35 degrees?
