Snigger... Let's get this out of the way... Waipu... Seriously?! As the LP guide points out, Imodium have missed a marketing opportunity for Kiwi's!
The birds of Puketi forest are both quieter and more civilised than those in Waipoura. I was woken at 6am and was having brekkie by half past! I woke up to mist and a very soggy tent.
I drove to Kerikeri at the top of the Bay of Islands and then down to Paiha. I visited the Whaitangi treaty grounds, where the document was signed by many Maori chiefs agreeing to peace and NZ becoming part of the British Empire. There were some beautiful wood carvings in the meeting house and around the grounds.
Having walked a considerable way from where I stranded my car I treated myself to some of the best fish and chips I've ever had whilst looking across the bay (not too shabby!).
I continued my journey south, making my first petrol stop and then stopping again at Whangarei.
I find myself going against all of my camping principles. I am in a proper campsite, with caravans and kids and things! I drove past the alternative which was in sand dunes and looked busy. I'd also read that it had a reputation for attracting gay nudists, I'm not sure if that is gays and nudists or a very elite group, but either way, not my bag! Here at Waipu Cove campsite I took a quick stroll over the dune behind my quiet pitch, carefully selected for me, which provided a suitably attractive vista (see photo) and an hour strolling along the tide line. Plus, I've got hot showers here so I shouldn't smell too bad when I pick Gary up tomorrow!
