One of the top things I wanted to do here in NZ was to walk the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. A 19.4K walk heralded as the finest one day walk in this fine land.
And I've done it! And so did Gaz! No ankle dramas and so far very little pain, although given the distance we covered I'm expecting some.
We were fed a full English brekkie at 7am, given a larger than necessary packed lunched, ushered onto a minibus and dropped at the Mangatepopo carpark and started our trek at 8.30. After a tough climb up the Devils staircase and across the Mars-like South Crater we were rewarded with amazing views into the Red Crater and down to the stunning Emerald Lakes via a long scree slope, which was very entertaining.
Shortly after the red crater we entered into the active volcanic zone, which we had been briefed on, basically, if the volcano blows then run away from any flying debris! Te Maari erupted November 2012 whilst people were on this route. Gary and I were so bored on the descent we were willing the volcano to erupt again! After an hours wait for our return transportation we sent a lovely 30mins in the spa at our accommodation.
I'm now lying in bed writing this having had a delicious but rather large steak and salad, followed by tiramisu and washed down with a bottle of wine. Zzzzzz......
