Day 8 of our travels saw us visiting Custer State Park. We drove the Wildlife Loop and were very happy to see lots of animals. We saw Buffalo, White tail deer, Mule deer, Prairie dogs, Pronghorns and Bighorn sheep. Unfortunately we haven't seen any Elk yet.
There were signs posted that Buffalo were dangerous and not to approach them. We did get out at one point to see them and they weren't that far off the road. Then someone told us that the Park Ranger said to go down a side road and they would be right at the car. In fact they were so close we could have reached out and touch them. We did find a small herd that headed right out onto the road between us and a car coming from the opposite direction. There was a fence on the opposite side of the road so they had to walk up the road a little ways with us following behind. It was quite funny. There were lots and lots of babies.
Every year in the fall they round up the Buffalo and sort them ensuring that the Park can handle the quantity that they have.
Custer State Park is a beautifully kept park with lots of care taken to the wilderness. Some of the roads were extremely winding - to the point that we were meeting ourselves. We had several tunnels to go through which were only wide enough for one car so you had to beep your horn before going through.
Two of these tunnels led to beautiful views of Mount Rushmore as we came out of the tunnel. It was awesome.
Mount Rushmore is very impressive. The Presidents' heads that are carved are Washington, Jefferson, Roosevelt and Lincoln.
Note - I was using 2 cameras so the pictures in the albums look a bit out of sequence because there are some from the first camera and then some from the second and I was taking pictures of the same thing with both cameras.
