I mentioned in one of our blogs that Jordan had been suffering from a fever. Well yesterday morning he wasn´t getting any better so we decided to call a doctor. The doctor visited and took some tests - it turns out that he has a stomach infection caused by both bacteria and parasites. Because of this, he was taken to hospital where he spent the night and will be spending the next two nights there as well.
The infection isn´t serious and apprently it is very common among travellers. He could have caught it from a number of places - a salad, tap water or even the river we jumped in (clearly all those years of having to eat my mum´s cooking has made my stomach stronger!); the treatment is simply antibiotics. However for the first few days they need to be given to him via a drip and then he can start taking tablets. He is already on the mend and in 10 days time he will be as good as new.
This clearly has affected our travel plans and we will now be hanging around in Arequipa until Monday. Our next stop was orginally planned to be Cuzco, a place where alcohol and trekking will feature heavily. Obviously these are two things which are not advisable just after leaving hospital on antibiotics! Therefore we are going to visit Puno first to give Jordan time to gain full strength, afterwhich we will hit Cuzco. It will involve a bit of doubling back on ourselves, but it seems like the best option at the moment.
Feel free to ask me any questions and I will keep you as updated as I can.
