Siem Reap has been our first taste of true SE Asia and so far it's set the bar quite high.
Yesterday we ventured down to the river and caught a boat to the largest freshwater lake in SE Asia- Tonle Sap, also the gateway to the Mekong. We sailed through a floating community of around 5,800 people and visited a floating school for orphaned children. Although we were discouraged to give money, our boat driver told us that we could take food for the children so we thought what better to bring them than lolly pops! It was great to see their faces light up and they were very appreciative. Although in hindsight...maybe rice would have been a bit more useful??
Today we were up at 0430 to visit the '8th wonder of the world'- Angkor Wat. We were promised a sunrise although we haven't really seen the sun since we've arrived, just cloud. Despite this, the temples were amazing. As hard as it is to admit, it definitely puts England's Stonehenge to shame!! According to the tour map the temples were built anywhere between the 1st and 12th centuries. They are scattered endlessly through the jungle so we must have walked for miles however our tour finished at Ta Prohm, where the film 'Tombraider' was set.
It has been a long day but tonight we are off into the town to celebrate our last night in Siem Reap because tomorrow we head to Battambang...
