Well I'm not sure it's news but the coach journey was as fun as it sounded and we had very little sleep. Needless to say, we arrived in Sihanoukville rather bleary eyed and a bit grumpy. A refreshing ride on the back of a local's motorbike took us from the bus station into town and then to the hostel that we had pre-booked, 'The Led Zephyr'. It's rock and roll all day, with wall-sized paintings of Hendrix, Jagger and Morrison. Definitely my kind of hostel!
After a well needed shower and a change of clothes it was down to the beach for a quick dip and dinner.
The town itself is nice but I can't say it reflects true Cambodia and certainly feels like it's been built around the tourists. Most of Sihanoukville's restaurants have a wide selection of western foods. The vegetable lok lak or the Khmer curry, that we would have had in Battambang, have been replaced by all day breakfasts and pizzas. As well as the food, the price of beer is different here- we're now paying around 60p instead of 30p for a glass.
In spite of the price hike, we decided our budgets could just about stretch to a couple more, after the 'Turkish' barbequed chicken we had for dinner. But before we knew it, we had been lured into JJ's beach bar, covered in fluorescent paint, going under the flaming limbo for the second time and collecting our prize of another free shot.
Having woken up bleary eyed again and even grumpier, we decided against the planned boat trip. Instead we've spent the day lounging by the beach, working up a sweat from endless games of pool and table tennis and then cooling off in the sea.
Although the beaches here are good, apparently they're better on the islands which are about 40 minutes away on a boat. We've been promised white sand and 'water like glass'- he was a very convincing salesman and so that's our next stop, Koh Rong. The island offers electricity for a few hours per day and the hostels are the straw huts on the beach, meters from the sea, with hammocks to sleep in. We'll keep our fingers crossed!
