It's a shame to have left so soon- Koh Rong has been a pleasure. Although it's not as remote as it was made out to be, there are long white-sandy beaches and the water is very clear! I loved the relaxed way of life the islanders had and it was easy to sink into it.
The food made a welcome change to the westernised-food of Sihanoukville. During the day, fresh ice cold banana shakes kept us going until the huge selection of fish would come out, the day's catch, onto the barbeques for a late dinner.
We were also very lucky with the weather. Since we arrived on the island, it's been sunshine and cloudless blue skies- perfect for yesterday's snorkelling and fishing trip, which I didn't want to end. The boat crew took us to all the 'best spots' for each activity. Hopefully I captured some of the fish we saw on my go pro although I'm not holding my breath, I don't think my photography skills are quite up to scratch! I think almost everyone managed to catch at least one fish which meant we didn't go hungry for the bbq in the evening. The food on the boat was great. Whilst we played volleyball on the beach, the crew prepared the bbq. We were assured the fish, that none of us had seen before, were safe to eat and the crew also supplied some beers and a bottle of whiskey which accompanied the sunset perfectly. Once the sun had set, our final stop of the trip was to see some glowing plankton. Once again, the crew found the 'best spot' and dropped the anchor for the last time. We were still unsure what we were looking for but after jumping into the deep, dark water, it was worth the wait. As we swam, the plankton in the water looked like we were swimming in electricity- everyone and everything sparkled! It was the perfect end to a good day.
We left the island just after 10am this morning and got to Sihanoukville just before 11am. After a quick pit stop at the 'Led Zephyr' (for the second banana shake of the day), we headed straight for the 1pm bus that brought us to Kampot. Similar to Battambang, it's inland and there seems to be less tourists. Because it's our penultimate stop in Cambodia, we've booked three (potentially four) nights here, hoping to make the most it whilst we can. I've been hearing lots about Vietnam from the different people I've met so far so I think there will be a couple of evenings looking at maps and checking potential routes for the next stage.
