My friend Jayne and her aunty picked me up from the airport. We headed straight for Bondi beach. The beach had character with a series of small cafes along the coast. There were a few surfers waiting for waves out at sea. But generally the beach was quite empty. It seemed strange as the sun was out and the beach looked beautiful. Apparently the beach got rammed in summer. We tested the waters and it was freezing so we understood why all the surfers were wearing wetsuits.
Later on Jaynes aunty Amanda took us to the city centre. Jayne and I walked along the river up to Sydney harbour bridge and the opera house. We saw people on the bridge walking along the top - this was an excursion that Jayne intended to do when she was back in Sydney. The opera house was smaller than I imagined. But the views of the bridge and harbour were beautiful in the early evening light. We went to catch a ferry to Amanda's house. Many people used the ferry as part of their commute to Sydney, what a lovely way to finish work. We caught the ferry just as the sun was going down and got some amazing pictures of the sun setting behind the bridge. Jaynes aunty lives in Morman so we had to catch a couple of buses to get to her house. But that kind of journey was considered a good commute for someone living in Sydney and many people spend 2 hours getting to work.
The houses in Amanda's area were big and homely. Each one was different and it made the area look lovely. They had moved out here from Belgium 4 years ago and you could hear the Australian accents in Jayne's cousins voices.
The next day we explored Manly. The beach was much longer than Bondi beach and there were more surfers. The surfers here were finding it easier to catch waves, we were impressed as we sat and watched on the beach. There were some school children sitting near us and we thought about how nice it would be to go down to the beach after school.
