Our hostel was right by the beach. In both directions the white sand stretched out in front of you and surfers could be seen up and down the beach. Behind the beach were high rise hotels and cafes nearer to the beachfront. It was quite a contrast but at sunset the sun fell behind the buildings creating quite an atmosphere. There was a path running alongside the beach where further a small market was set up. Also, every 100 yards there was an outdoor BBQ available for people to use. The beach is as the the name suggests perfectly set up for surfers.
Further into the centre the dynamics change and there are lots of new buildings being built. The street becomes more of a strip with clubs, bars and fast food places. During the day you get bombarded by promoters. However we managed to find some really nice places to eat and it attracted a lot of families for their holidays. Surfers paradise and towns nearby all seem based along the water and a tram runs from one town to the next.
I was a bit ill and run down by this point in the trip, luckily surfers paradise was the ultimate place to chill out and not do much. We had a couple of days of sun and we were able to see the beach in its full beauty. We also met some nice girls in our hostel room, two of which had got themselves jobs in surfers paradise. Jayne went out with the girls but wasn't impressed by the clubs which all seemed to play generic music. We were looking forward to seeing Byron bay and me being able to do more.
