I'm writing this entry retrospectively to fill in the gaps - another one from today to follow.
The last couple of days in Rarotonga were uneventful - I knew that New Zealand was quite likely to be busy so I quite fancied chilling out. On my last night, I was due to attend an Island Night with Ingrid, as her grandson was performing at it - but she was ill (originally thought it was dengue fever, but turned out to be food poisoning - hmm, wonder if she had fish) so I went out to eat on my own again. I went to a slightly less salubrious place where the owner didn't have any printed menus but made one up for me. He seemed really nervous of me as well, which didn't fill me with confidence. Actually, when the steak arrived, it was - pretty medioce, better than I was expecting - especially since I seemed to be eating at a table in the middle of a dancefloor, pointing directly at a huge screen which played a 20 minute loop of Beyonce and Snoop videos. I ate and left.
I was going to get the bus round the island on my last morning, but I spent too long packing, so I haven't seen much of Raro beyond the capital. Despite that, I think I chose well spending more time on Aitutaki.
So, then I flew on to Auckland and then Christchurch. I talked to a lovely couple called Frank and Margaret on the first flight - Frank says he knows someone who helps place people from other countries into work in New Zealand, so if anyone's interested, drop me a line... Margaret has 10 kids but looks pretty good on it, there must be something in the NZ lifestyle!
On the second flight, one of my fillings came out on (will I never learn) a boiled sweet. But then it went back in - and now I can't get it out again! Any dentists out there - anyone know if this is a really bad thing...? I'm tempted to leave it till I get back, or to Sydney at least.
So far then, I've lost a filling (and myself, several times), soaked a pair of trousers in deet, worn my hiking shoes in the sea (they reek now), and popped a button on my hiking shorts - I know I've put on weight, but still...
I'm no better at packing than I was when I started - I reckon my luggage is now 30% bulkier than it was when I started, but with nothing additional in. In fact, I think there's less in it - all my socks seem to have disappeared. Can any fellow travellers explain this sock mystery?
